ESW VIII
every year for the past 8 years, me, ed, and jim do a trip together on one of the may bank holiday weekends. it’s a tradition and whatever we’re doing with our lives, we always reserve a weekend for this trip, the ESW. ESW stands for ‘extreme sports weekend’, although it never really includes any exterme sports but the name has stuck after ESW I when we went surfing (which isn’t very extreme either)….
this year was a vintage year. after the great road trip last summer with ulf, gianfranco and giovanni, i really wanted to see more of the italian lakes and the swiss alps. i can’t think of many places in the world that have so much to offer in such a short distance. after leaving milan malpensa airport, we were on lake maggiore within 20 minutes. actually it was closer to an hour as we got a bit lost, but it could have been 20! from there it’s a couple of hours drive and you’re driving amongst the snow covered alps. incredible.
there was still a lot of snow around in the alps and it was fairly surreal walking in knee deep snow in shorts and t-shirt. after that it was back down to lake como which is just a ridiculously beautiful place, photos of all this as usual on my flickr.
looking ahead - really looking forward to august, we already have some confirmed visitors, so platania will be full of foreign faces again. i guess we need to get that bathroom finished then…
